I’m a current IMAer (the doc filmmaking program evgenia went to) , and ngl, I feel like I’m the token cis upperish middle class white boy.. I work full time as do most of the other people in my program, there’s less and less self flagellation going on as the years move on and our institutions crumble. You see the brass of the IMA having this exact ethos though and nobody wants to make work like that, especially considering the current class and racial demographics of the IMA
I read Quiet Street at the suggestion of these Nefarious Russians. I enjoyed it enough that the library charged me a fee. And I still have the book on my coffee table. I lived in relative poverty as a child but was only a stone's throw from serious wealth, members of my immediate family were quite wealthy and, one, held a VP level position in large international corporation. What never stopped amazing me, I remain amazed, was the ability of these generally affable people to ignore the poverty of those right next to them, including their own family and close associates. It would have been less shocking had they been less likeable but many of them were, and are, pleasant company.

This was great, and really liked how Nick made it a 2 way dialogue and not just be the interviewee
