So Substack just released Notes, its Twitter competitor. Given that Twitter has turned into even more of a shithole these days (hard to believe but true) and given that I’m fairly certain my account has been throttled for a while now, wondering if I should give this Notes thing a try. Kinda hesitant, to be honest. I mean, yet another social network sucking up our time?
What do people think? Any of you thinking of using this thing?
I don't think social media is inherently terrible, but the way it's been used recently (and manipulated by governments and shaped around consumerism) is. I see Notes as a potentially more grown-up way to share ideas and information than other platforms. And being able to shape the way a brand new, promising social platform is used (i.e., more substantive and less petty posts) is a positive, I think. I say go for it and see how it goes.
I'm on here because it works like Twitter but is, at least for now, less of a poisonous shithole. It also seems like a good way to expand the reach of one's newsletter on the Substack network.
I remember reading that substack is losing money hand over fist. So despite all their lofty talk about building a community of writers, there is probably some way in which all of us are potential revenue sources in another data-harvesting scheme, just like with every other social media platform.
I've clearly learned nothing though because I'm already posting.
I think it's mostly guesswork but wouldn't be surprised if they're losing lots of money. They're always adding features and expanding -- and this Notes thing is clearly is gonna take a lot of money to build and get right over time. I think they missed their IPO possibility with the Fed interest rates hike and VC money is a lot tighter because of said hike. That being said I do think they're pretty open about Notes thing: they think it will drive subscriptions, which at the end makes them more money. Will they succeed? Is there data harvested on the backend in some nefarious way? Who the fuck knows.
I think it’s time for new avenues. Twitter, Facebook et al, aren’t just toxic. They’re quickly becoming antiquated. They’ve almost given up on new users, instead seeking to cling onto their existing bases. The best way to do that is to keep playing to the gallery and sowing division.
I don't have a Twitter account myself, so obviously I'd say go for it. Having said that, as pointed out by an earlier commenter, it may be an unnecessary addition to your workload.
I generally think social media is terrible, but also not going anywhere. It’s become part of the ecosystem where artists and creators promote their work, so you might as well have a more neutral platform?
I left Twitter early this year because of its poisonous and uncivil level of engagement. Tried Mastodon for a couple of months, which has a positive feature of no ads, however I found it boring, boring, boring. Subscribed to Substack about a month ago and have found great articles and interviews, and respectful engagement. I think something like Notes will be a positive addition, going to try right away.
Hebrews 10:25 says, “… not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” And USA has right of assembly in its constitution/ bill of rights ergo we must continue to assemble. WWG1WGA? We must assemble. Your work is so important for expanding the noosphere so do the best you can. OK? If discouraged read “Biocentrism”💖
First, it's a shameless Twitter ripoff, and not only shameless but unspeakably lame. How low is your self-esteem if you feel the need to ape an antiquated, backward platform like Twitter? Second, Substack is an insular Yank thing (present company excluded) and its Twitter imitation will necessarily be one too.

Sure. Why not! Twitter sucks
yes very true
I say fuck it I’m getting on there just because some of the most self important morons in the planet use substack so there might be some funny stuff

Twitter has turned into a shithole. I say, what do you have to lose?
honestly until twitter is dead in the ground for good i doubt people will tear themselves away, myself included
Gotta say, Notes doesn’t look like it’s off to a good start. Is anyone actually using this thing? I’m not.

The call for "retail" investors seemed like a big flag that they're having trouble raising the money they need. https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/28/23660473/substack-retail-investors-revenue-profit

I'll probably maintain a basic premise there like I do on Mastodon.

I imagine you’ll have to manage the notes section for inappropriate content? A time suck? Best wishes for your decision.

I moved from Twitter to Mastodon as a lot of people. I think that's the safest bet. I won't be using Substack notes.

This is me, e.g.
Been following it loosely. Very funny all around.
