Four weekends this summer in Brooklyn, they'll be screening different Russian films from the late 1980s and 1990s — all of them set in a decaying or collapsed Soviet society.
Little Vera was definitely shown in the US, since I’ve seen ads for it in old newspapers in my job as an archivist. American reviews that I’ve seen praised the movie for its depictions of sex, while no doubt denouncing the same in our own films. I wish I could go, but I’m stuck in a certain Southern city for the foreseeable future, awaiting our own collapse.
Another absorbing film from this time is Assuage my sadness/ Утоли моя печали (1989). It's jarring because it includes a rape, but the old woman is a magnet for the free, unguided youths. I loved her genuine caring, and the other eccentric but kind, harmless fools. I will come to some of your screenings.
I loved all the ironies: Valera wearing a CCCP tee; pedagogy of atheism after the fall; Artem's continuing practice of народов дружба, immediately after which the Vietnamese guy who tries to stop a rape is shot and killed. I had to be at work early this am. What did I miss?
