I’ve been reading about the development of ancient Israelite ideology — what the ancient Jews of Judea believed, why they believed it, the various strains of myth and counter-myth that congealed to create Judaism. Meanwhile, the Jeffrey Epstein saga has played out in the background. Believe it or not, I saw a connection between these two topics, although probably not in the way you conspiracy heads are thinking.

If you look at American society in the same cold and detached way people study ancient history and dead cultures, the fight over the Jeffrey Epstein story — I’ll call it the Epstein Myth — makes a lot more sense. Or rather, I should say that the centrality of the Epstein Myth to today’s political culture makes a lot more sense and in fact takes on a deeper significance. Many have attached themselves to the story as a way of coping with reality and maintaining their faith in the system. Yeah, as paradoxical as it may seem, the obsession with the Epstein Myth is a defensive mechanism.

As I’ve been reading up on ancient Israelites, it struck me that the Epstein Myth says less about Epstein and more about American culture and the way people here think. To me, it seems that the reason why Epstein has become a central character to MAGA (and to some extent to the left, as well) is because his existence — and the hints at the shadowy conspiracy that surrounds him — offers an explanation for why American elites are so horrible. To a large chunk of people in this country, the Epstein Myth answers questions that have been bouncing around in their heads for a long time:

Why do the elites in charge of this country keep selling everyone out? Why are they so shitty to us — even as they make promises to fix things and to help? It doesn’t matter what line of work they are in or what their politics are…they can be business guys, politicians, libs, conservatives…everyone knows they all follow the same script. They say they’re on the good side and they make all sorts of promises to turn things around…and yet, they never really change anything at all. And if they do change things, they change things for the worse. The wars keep going, the jobs never come back, everything keeps getting more expensive, salaries decrease. In short, the rich get richer and the rest of us keep getting fucked. No matter who it is, the people in power seem to care little about anything other than staying in power, getting themselves and their friends rich…they all bow down to the same game god: Mammon.

I imagine quite a few Americans look at this situation and think, “What the hell is going on, man? Why are our elites so horrible? Why are they constantly lying to us? Why are they exploiting us? Why are they fucking us so hard? We live in the greatest country on earth! The freest, the most democratic. We are a light unto the nations! So why are the people who end up rising to the top of this amazing and free system such scoundrels? Why are they such evil shits?”

You’d think some would then realize that, well, hey, maybe the system is built wrong? Maybe a system that puts private enrichment — no matter how ruthless and destructive to the public and the planet, as the highest moral value — produces an elite that reflects this debased morality? Maybe the conman ethos that’s celebrated in America as man’s highest calling translates into a less than ideal ruling class? Maybe there’s something going on here? Yeah, and few might have that thought. But the vast majority don’t. Most people won’t want to go there — they can’t. They can’t consider the possibility that there is something fundamentally rotten about their country. They’ve been taught that theirs is the best and freest place on earth. They think that the Constitution is basically a holy document written by angels and that American corporations are engines of progress and civilization, spreading goodness around the globe. If they don’t believe in America…and in their own moral and exalted place in the world order…what can they believe in? “Our society is good,” they say to themselves. “No…the problem is not us…the problem is something else. The problem is them.” There has to be some external evil that has crept into our world and corrupted our people from within!

And this is where Jeffrey Epstein and the various satanic pedo conspiracies come in. The QAnon and Pizzagate stuff and the rest. To a chunk of the country, Epstein is one agent of this evil cabal that’s corrupting their great society…blackmailing and subverting their sovereign democracy. Whose agent is he? If you read the mainstream MAGA guys, Epstein is an agent of a liberal pedo cabal. To others, he represents zionists — he’s an agent of Israel’s control of America…someone who’s making America do the zionists bidding. Others go deeper, they see Epstein as just one manifestation of a much more ancient Jewish conspiracy to control the world through dark and illicit means. Meanwhile, another big minority gets more metaphysical: they think of the devil. To them, Epstein is part of a satanic cabal — a conspiracy to corrupt the righteous, to control the world, and to keep God out. In this view, the Jews are agents of the Prince of Darkness.

I think someone like Whitney Webb represents the more mainstream, more levelheaded kind of thinking on this. She tries hard to be factual — she’s just connecting the dots! — and yet she can’t help but make Epstein part of some old (transgenerational is the word she uses) Jewish criminal conspiracy to control us. And Whitney, as I said, represents the more level-headed analysis of the Epstein Myth. But she’s right on the cusp and you can see where this goes if you let your imagination fly just a little bit more..

Now I’m not saying Jeffrey Epstein or those in his orbit are innocent. Not at all. He was almost certainly some sort of high-level pimp, procuring women for his sleazy buddies and benefactors, targeting and abusing girls and vulnerable young women — all while giving solid tax advice to a rarified group of people. (Among those who sought out his help with their finances included Noam Chomsky, if you can believe it.) Maybe Epstein had dealings with Israeli intelligence. Maybe he was working for the CIA. He was clearly tied up with a lot of rich and powerful people in America and beyond. Maybe he was feeding intel to someone and maybe there was blackmail involved as part of his “work.” Maybe he himself was blackmailed by others more powerful to keep tabs on his clients as a way of staying out of jail. Maybe he was whacked in jail. All of this is very possible. And it is very possible Donald Trump is tied up with him…which is why he’s not releasing the files now. And the glimpse that the Epstein case gives into the private lives of our bored, corrupt, and degenerate elites — with their orgies in the sky, their private islands, their stables of beautiful girls, their sexual perversions, their palace intrigues, and all the little pleasure perks that people get when they are ruling the world — is valuable. It’s also very titillating to the public. And so a lot of people’s interest in the story comes out of that — the mix of wealth, fame, power, politics, beauty, and perversion.

But there’s a reason why the Epstein Myth has taken on such big political significance. He looms large in people’s minds because he helps explain why America — which is supposed to be a good society — is so corrupt. People have attached themselves to the story as a way of coping with reality and maintaining their faith in the system. Yeah, as paradoxical as it seems, this obsession with the Epstein Myth is a defensive mechanism, a cultural immune response that fights off any real accountability. It blames America’s problems on some ancient evil cabal rather than blaming it on America itself. I mean, none of this degenerate and exploitative stuff is new. Every massively unequal society has had the same sort of set up. But with the Epstein Myth leaves questions about what happens an America with massive inequality untouched. So it is comforting in that way. Epstein reveals evil debased conspiracies, but it leaves America mostly pure and good. It protects America’s sense of itself because it blames its corruption on a foreign source. To put another way, the Epstein Myth leaves God untouched…it blames the devil for all the problems in the world. That’s why for MAGA, the Epstein Myth took on such a big importance.

Obviously, this need to project your own problems onto some outside entity — this need to blame someone else for God’s mistakes — is not new. It pops up everywhere, across all times. And as I’ve been reading, it even pops up among ancient Israelite culture and texts.

As discussed in Imperialism and Jewish Society by Seth Schwartz, this conflict could be seen in the fight in the literary and historical history of Judea. The The Book of Enoch is an example of this kind of conspiracy culture. For those who don’t know, Enoch is an ancient text that ultimately did not get included in the Official Jewish Scripture read by the majority of Jews around the world. But the text was widely read at the time of its creation — sometime between 300–100 BCE — and continues to be read by Ethiopian Jews. Enoch was in essence a kind of ancient Jeffrey Epstein/Satanic Pedo Cabal myth that complemented the official “good” story. Enoch tried to reconcile the obvious contradictions in the Torah. If God created everything and God is good, why was there so much evil in the world? The answer, as told in the book, is that the bad stuff is all because of a conspiracy by fallen angels. They were sent by God to watch over the people on Earth but they turned on God — they had sex with human women (the perverts!), birthed half-angel offspring, became corrupt, and basically set themselves up as rulers. These angels turned against God. In short, Evil is not God’s fault. Evil in this world is the fault of angels that had gone bad.1

Obviously, the Enoch conspiracy has a logical fallacy built into it. If God is the source of everything, why did he allow evil to enter into his angels? Isn’t God all-powerful? The same logical fallacy exists in the Epstein Myth, too. If America is such a great society and the ruling class is so wonderful, why is it so easily corrupted? Why do good people at the top allow the pedos to walk among them? Why are they so easily taken in by their lust for girls and power?

If you zoom out even more, the need for conspiracy theories like the Epstein Myth might be baked into societies — not as an anti-elite narrative but as a mechanism that protects the elite. Because if you’re told that your society is the best and most moral one there is and yet your society clearly has problems…the conspiracy theory that blames outside forces acts as a protective force, shielding elites from accountability and making it easy to blame others. The way Jews were made scapegoats in Germany is one recent example. The fact that Rasputin was blamed for the degeneracy of the Tsar is another example. And of course there’s the focus on the “Jewish lobby” that supposedly explains why America backs genocide. There are many other examples…

Things have radically changed for the MAGA world now that Trump is not into the Epstein Myth anymore. Suddenly, Epstein holds no explanatory power for them — suddenly it doesn’t explain why America is so corrupt. Trump and his people had made Epstein a liberal boogyman — he was the lynchpin in a global pedo cabal working with the wokeists and the globalists to undermine America. But now that Trump has flipped and is saying that the Epstein Myth is itself a liberal conspiracy to undermine himself and the MAGA movement (possibly hatched by Barack Obama himself!), you have all sorts of MAGA characters who previously made Epstein central parts of their identity go back on their word and fall into line and say Epstein is no big deal. Now that the boss is implicated in the Evil Cabal, talk of this Evil Cabal must be suppressed.

It’s all very comic in its own way. I mean look at the Red Scare woman Dasha Nekrasova. She made a film about Epstein…and now she says it’s no big deal and in fact only crazy people are into it.
