I had on NPR in the car earlier and they managed to squeeze the word "antisemitism" into a 5 minute segment about a dozen times. Not a single use of the word "genocide" or the death toll in Gaza, but instead framed as part of an allegedly large and growing wave of "antisemitism." This will probably be brushed under the rug much more quickly than Luigi and any mention of it in the mainstream media will be conveniently laundered of all the depraved live-streamed and ongoing [and worsening] acts of blatant evil committed both proudly and loudly, that drove this person to commit such a crime.

And you are right about the so-called manifesto. It's incredibly thoughtful and well written. But nothing will change for the better.

Out of curiosity, I asked Claude 4 about "documented incidents of violence against the Third Reich's diplomatic personnel in the years leading up to WW2 and during the war".

It yielded a close match to this one: Ernst vom Rath, third secretary of the Reich's embassy in France was murdered by a Polish-German Jew refugee, Herschel Grynszpan, in 1938. This was used as a pretext for the Kristallnacht. For reference, third secretaries are low-level personnel. An acquaintance of mine who was one told me jokingly that he was a glorified amanuensis and his job was literally answering the phone. Alas, Grynszpan didn't write a manifesto and his motives have remained unclear, but the wiki says a plausible one was that Germany had decided to send his family back to Poland.

I guess violence driven by empathy for people living under duress is not so uncommon. It would be sinisterly ironic if Israel decided to "pull a Hitler" and increase the violence in Gaza (if this is even possible) in response to this incident, but I guess the Kristallnacht was small potatoes in comparison to what is happening now in Gaza. Smotrich and Ben-Givir wouldn't be turned on enough.

All very sad. Grynszpan's action didn't solve anything, and neither will Rodriguez's.

I mean yeah you right, this attack could be used to provide pretext for a Kristallnacht type situation here in USA — but the targets would be Palestinians and their supporters.

For sure, just like the original Kristallnacht, it's the same side that bears the brunt of the violence that ensues, if it does.

But my guess is that it's gonna be essentially spin-doctoring to justify less tolerance of anti-Zionism or Palestinian solidarity.

"Knowing it has the full support of the Trump administration, the Israeli government is going to previously unheard-of lengths of criminality.

On Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) opened fire on a group of diplomats from over 20 countries, including the UK, France and Canada, as they were visiting a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Jenin. Video footage of the tour shows Israeli troops consistently and repeatedly firing at least seven shots at the delegation as they fled. In a statement, the IDF admitted that they fired at the delegation, calling the attack “warning shots” after it claimed the delegation deviated from an approved course."

They were already ramping up the brutality and criminality. And then there's Iran.

"On Wednesday, Israeli attacks killed 82 people in Gaza, bringing the official death toll to 53,655 with 121,950 wounded, Gaza’s health ministry said. The number of people killed since March 18, when Israel unilaterally broke a two-month ceasefire, has risen to over 3,509.

On Tuesday, CNN reported that Israel is making active preparations for an attack on Iran’s nuclear program, moving aircraft into position and carrying out training attacks.

In a report Wednesday, Axios confirmed CNN’s reporting, citing Israeli intelligence sources, with Axios reporting that “Israel Defense Forces have been conducting exercises and other preparations for a possible strike in Iran.”

One source told Axios, “There was a lot of training and the U.S. military sees everything and understands Israel is preparing.” Another added, “”Bibi is waiting for the nuclear talks to collapse and for the moment Trump will be disappointed about the negotiations and open to giving him the go-ahead.”

This is so no bueno. Thanks for sharing the suicide note, sure puts to rest the idea of a false flag. Despite the eloquence of the explication, nevertheless a wicked, confused, unproductive act and it won't be as legible as he wants. And there were still so many other 'violent' options before this one.

"a symbol that’s become the 21st century swastika" the irony is beyond incredible

Thats as coherent an explication as you can get given the situation and the fact that he was driven insane by genocide content online

I don't really see much insanity here & given his deep familiarity with the conflict re: Protective Edge, I imagine he actively avoided watching livestreamed genocide online. I actually think that stuff dulls the wits & makes the public feel powerless.

I'm going to wait to find out if these two were specifically targeted besides just who their employer was—and decide on ER's rationality at that point.

Yeah well…Insanity in the sense that anyone who does something like this does it after being driven mad by the standards of our society—no matter how rational.

if you watch the WSJ video I embedded, apparently the shooter's father did a tour in Iraq and came back with trophies and war stories and hearing that impacted him as a child.

"wicked, confused, unproductive act"

While I'm sure there will be plenty of people vying to apply words like "wicked," "evil," and "___ hating" to this (it's a commonplace when those considered "inferior" and/or those who sympathise with them do something like this), it remains to be seen if this killing was either confused or unproductive.

(That said, I wish Rodriguez had done something else rather than kill what might be a couple of "little Eichmanns".)

It will be a like an air tanker of cold water on the movement. Already truckloads of hay are being made off it. This is exactly why so many suspect a false flag, it's so obviously a setback. "Oh look, turns out they really are all radicalized domestic terrorists!" I mean, they already say that, but it gets a lot more traction after this crap. And it makes any kind of activism much more dangerous.

Obviously, I find it aggravating. Now I will have to argue around this event every time I engage with anyone on the topic. And we were just starting to get past "but do you condemn hamas" horseshit. I know, first world problem - at least I'm not being starved or burned alive. So the struggle continues.
