As we sit all isolated from the world and from each other, I feel like the best thing I can do with my energy and my journalism right now is to try to cover this crisis as much as I can.
Hey Yasha, great piece. You're right: housing is a potent form of healthcare and it's despicable that the city isn't housing people safely, even with empty apartment buildings downtown. I have symptoms and am only recovering so quickly from them bc I have a place to quarantine. It's sick what they're doing, the shortages, willfully depriving us of healthcare.
I think the western fetishism of people from places the west doesn't like for basically no good reason is an interesting topic. I mean I exist because of that and the states' weaponization of immigrants in my own national origin story. So the piece you did on the dude who couldn't get enough culture and documented it while working to destroy it like the demented fkn sicko he was was great. Sadly elements of that piece kind of reminds me of some very close people in my family, but it's been so helpful for me to make sense of what the fuck has happened to us by way of being in the states for just a few generations. I'd be interested to read about other guys like him, but I'm not sure if it'd just be more of the same. They're basically creepy carbon copies of each other, so I dont know many new sites on the ground to cover on them.
Anyway, you do great work and I'm really inspired to write bc of it. Take care
Yasha, thanks so much. Really important what you are doing. I know it’s not your bread and butter, but I’m actually concerned about a statistical aspect of the mortality rates per age group. I think people of all age groups are at a much higher risk than we understand because of how we are looking at the data.
I believe this is because once a hospital passes capacity, the elderly no longer receive treatment, as we understand from Italy and Spain. Therefore, they essentially have no chance of recovery.
So, while it is understandable that the mortality rate is higher for those with immunity deficiencies, such as the elderly, the fact that we know now that mortality is possible even for minors (thanks to that horrible story about the victim who was refused care, RE: no health insurance) says to me that age is not the most important factor.
I don’t know the current statistics per group, but it hardly matters at this point. I’m more concerned about everyone taking care of themselves. I believe obesity and diabetes are actually going to be key markers to follow. (Aside from smoking and asthma, of course).
I am sad for how this is being managed. Trump cannot understand the impact of what reopening the country will do. He does not follow science and data.
It is being handled poorly here in Israel too. Most Israelis are not aware that Jordan and Lebanon are already under martial law and that Egypt and Syria are massively underreported. And it’s here, without question, spreading like wildfire, an invisible killer from which most here believe they are safe. And they are getting ready to reopen restaurants again in the name of commerce. Foolishness. Dollars over lives, the same game, but now instensifying like nothing we’ve ever seen.
I wish all my fellow humans the best as we move through this. I am juicing, including ginger, garlic, onion and citrus in my diet. This is a virus. Build your systems defenses, sun your clothes, bath when you come home, all that is important.

I would love to see coverage of any and every strike of any kind being planned in SoCal.
