After the horrible shooting in Uvalde — a massacre, as it has turned out, cowardly local cops spectacularly failed to stop — I wrote that it was almost certain that the depressingly unfixable politics of guns and mass shootings will quickly fall off the front page of the New York Times and be replaced by something a lot more comforting and reassuring.
